Simon Carr
System Engineer: Turbine and Auxiliaries, Heysham 2 Power Station, EDF Energy
Simon Carr began his career as an Industrial Placement at Heysham 2, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the station’s first large-scale condition monitoring system.
After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Simon transitioned to the Electricity Supply Industry. His work involved designing and testing components for transmission and distribution networks, with a focus on mechanical vibration-damping devices for power lines.
Returning to Heysham 2 in 2005 as a System Engineer, Simon initially focused on cooling water systems. By 2007, he was responsible for the main turbines, overseeing technical governance, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Simon also serves as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for all 15 Beran 766 units at Heysham 2.
Presentation
Title: Investigation and return to service of a 660MW unit following a mass loss from a coupling
Synopsis: In 2023, a power station faced significant challenges during the return-to-service process following an off-load refuelling outage. Excessive vibrations during the run-up led to a dynamic investigation to identify the root cause.
Post-shutdown, it was discovered that a 6.5 kg nut from a hydraulically tensioned coupling bolt had detached, causing severe damage to the pedestal and associated components.
This presentation will detail the dynamic analysis and rectification work performed using advanced 3D scanning technology, which enabled the unit to return to service without additional in-situ balancing. The session will also cover the lessons learned from this complex repair process.
