Christian Röthel holds a PhD in Physics, specialising in X-ray studies of crystalline materials. 

With over seven years of experience at Piezocryst Advanced Sensorics in Austria, Christian has collaborated closely with gas turbine OEMs, focusing on advanced combustion monitoring solutions. 

Christian's expertise lies in developing and applying piezoelectric sensors for dynamic pressure measurements, catering to research and development as well as serial instrumentation for gas turbines, ranging from 50 MW units to those exceeding 500 MW. 

Christian’s work is pivotal in ensuring reliable machine protection and monitoring, even under extreme temperatures surpassing 700°C.

Abstract

In the ever-evolving landscape of gas turbine technology, precise combustion monitoring is crucial for maximising performance, boosting efficiency, and guaranteeing operational safety. 

Christian’s presentation will delve into the role of piezoelectric dynamic pressure sensors and accelerometers in capturing real-time pressure fluctuations and accelerations near the combustion chamber. Withstanding extreme temperatures up to 700°C, these sensors are instrumental in optimising combustion dynamics and ensuring the reliable operation of modern gas turbines. 

The discussion will cover their construction, operating principles, and their significant impact on turbine performance and safety.
