Cybersecurity in the Utilities Sector: Protecting critical infrastructure

Abstract

This presentation addresses the growing concerns surrounding cybersecurity in the utilities field, focusing on the protection of digital instrumentation and online monitoring systems.

Since the advent of the World Wide Web in 1991, the speed of data access has significantly increased, leading to more data being stored in cloud infrastructures. However, this surge in connectivity also invites greater risks, including internet hacks, ransomware, and denial of service attacks. To safeguard organisational systems and data, a robust cybersecurity methodology is essential to prevent the theft of personal data and unauthorised control of systems.

This paper reviews critical cybersecurity considerations for the installation of complex digital instrumentation within the power generation industry, highlighting strategies to mitigate potential vulnerabilities.
