Presentation

Shaft Centerline: A key tool for rotating machinery diagnostics

Abstract

This presentation delves into the critical role of the shaft centerline in diagnosing issues in rotating machinery with fluid film bearings. This tool is essential for identifying problems through behaviour analysis. Two case studies will be featured:

  • Gas turbine instability: Analysing shaft centerline behaviour during various operational phases reveals insights into oil whip instability caused by clearance expansion from combustion chamber isolation.
  • Integrally geared compressor: Sudden changes in the shaft centerline during startup indicate resonance issues at specific speeds.

These cases highlight the practical application of Shaft Centerline in diagnosing and resolving critical machinery challenges.
