Managing Director at RITEC and Professor of Vibration Engineering at Cairo University

Professor Aly El-Shafei is a renowned figure in the field of vibration engineering and machinery diagnostics. He is a Certified Vibration Analyst, Category IV and holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 

Professor El-Shafei is the Vice President of the Vibration Institute, USA, and chairs the ISO committee ISO/TC108/SC2/WG10, playing a crucial role in setting global standards for machinery vibration diagnostics. 

Presentation: Use of shaft centerline in the diagnostics of rotating machinery supported by fluid film bearings.

Senior Reliability Condition Monitoring Engineer, SSE Thermal

Mal has worked within the power generation industry for 37 years and travelled the world investigating vibration issues at over 200 power generation sites.

Mal's expertise includes extensive knowledge of both low-speed and high-speed balancing, acquired through his work at various overspeed facilities across Europe, South Africa, and Brazil. 

Presentation: How SSE Thermal uses the PlantProtech Vision alarm functions to monitor and capture plant health and identify issues.

Rik Geerdink is a senior vibration expert and the owner of In2ViBa, with extensive experience in vibration analysis and predictive maintenance. 

Rik began his career at Engie Energy Netherlands, focusing on analysing the vibration behaviour of power trains and conducting FAT and SAT of turbines and generators.

Presentation: How a Gas turbine unit returns to service after a 2-year conservation. Going from almost no predictive maintenance to plant-wide predictive maintenance using Berans PCMS7600.

Simon Carr

System Engineer: Turbine and Auxiliaries, Heysham 2 Power Station, EDF Energy.

Simon Carr started at Heysham 2, where he helped set up its first large-scale condition monitoring system. With a mechanical engineering background, he initially designed vibration-damping devices for power lines.

Returning to Heysham 2 in 2005, Simon now oversees the maintenance and troubleshooting of main turbines and systems, and acts as the SPOC for all 15 Beran 766 units.

Presentation: Simon's session will explore the investigation and return-to-service process for a 660MW unit after a major coupling mass loss, highlighting dynamic analysis and innovative 3D scanning techniques, along with key lessons learned.

Chris Gilroy is a seasoned Dynamics and Condition Monitoring Engineer with more than 13 years at EDF Energy. He holds a Vibration Analysis Category IV certification (ISO 18436) and excels in turbine and power plant analysis and maintenance.

Presentation: Chris, alongside Simon Carr, will present their joint findings on the recovery process for a 660MW unit affected by significant coupling mass loss. Their session will highlight the use of dynamic analysis and cutting-edge 3D scanning technology to address the issue, offering insights into the resolution strategy and valuable lessons learned.

Sébastien Grégoire is the Technical Referent for Vibrations at Laborelec, part of the ENGIE Group. Since 1999, he has been key in developing the LVMS vibration monitoring system and managing Laborelec’s Diagnostic Center. He currently oversees remote monitoring of over 100 shaft lines globally and leads Engie’s R&I project on thermal asset management.
